**Vershire Woman Arrested for Embezzling $186,000 from Tunbridge Volunteer Fire Department**
TUNBRIDGE — A Vershire woman has been arrested on charges of embezzling more than $180,000 from the Tunbridge Volunteer Fire Department over a 10-year period.
Jacqueline Higgins, 63, was hired by the Tunbridge department as a bookkeeper in 1994. According to Vermont State Police, she is alleged to have stolen $186,000 from the department between 2014 and 2025.
The Tunbridge Volunteer Fire Department first contacted State Police in Royalton on August 11 regarding a possible embezzlement. Police reviewed the department’s financial records, which revealed the theft and identified Higgins as the primary suspect.
An audit conducted by the department uncovered discrepancies in the financial records, leading to further investigation. Following the findings, Higgins resigned from her position as bookkeeper.
On Wednesday, State Police arrested Higgins and transported her to the Berlin Barracks for processing. She was released with a citation and is scheduled to appear for arraignment on December 31 at 8:30 a.m. in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Chelsea.
