Broncos pull off yet another miracle with last-second win over Texans

The Denver Broncos are earning the “cardiac” label early in the 2025 season. In a thrilling matchup inside NRG Stadium, Denver withstood a feisty Houston Texans team that played without their star quarterback C.J. Stroud late in the game. Once again, head coach Sean Payton and his team pulled off a stunning comeback, this time capped off by a walk-off field goal from Wil Lutz.

This victory marks another epic Broncos comeback, following a memorable win two weeks earlier against the New York Giants—a game in which Denver scored 33 points all in the fourth quarter. Against Houston, the Broncos faced a much smaller deficit, erasing an eight-point lead held by the Texans.

So how did Denver pull off this comeback? Breaking down the pivotal sequences that swung momentum in the Broncos’ favor during their clash with Houston reveals key plays led by quarterback Bo Nix.

Nix ignited a crucial fourth-quarter drive, hitting his former Oregon teammate Troy Franklin on the first two plays. These receptions moved the ball to Houston’s 45-yard line, covering 16 yards. Franklin then added another catch on the drive—an eight-yarder that advanced the Broncos to the 30-yard line.

The drive culminated in an unexpected weapon scoring for Denver: running back RJ Harvey. Harvey dashed 27 yards into the end zone, cutting the Texans’ lead to just two points. Though Harvey has only touched the ball 20 times over the past three weeks, he has found the end zone multiple times in that span, proving to be a valuable asset.

Denver’s defense then took over. Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph orchestrated a shutdown effort, forcing Texans quarterback Davis Mills into incomplete passes. Even more impressive, Houston’s next four drives lasted a mere three to five plays each, all ending with punts as Denver’s defense remained relentless.

With one final opportunity to clinch the game, Nix showcased his mobility, scrambling for 25 yards and positioning the Broncos within field goal range. Wil Lutz then calmly drilled a 34-yard field goal to seal the victory.

This win improves Denver’s record to 7-2 overall, but more importantly, it reinforces their reputation as a team that thrives under pressure. The Broncos are now an impressive 4-0 in games when trailing in the fourth quarter—a testament to their resilience and fighting spirit in 2025.
