There was a scary moment in Iowa on Saturday when Iowa State tight end Benjamin Brahmer collapsed and had to be carted off the field during a college football game.
Brahmer went down after a hard hit from Arizona State’s Keith Abney II while attempting to catch a pass. With the Cyclones trailing 24-19 in the fourth quarter, Brahmer initially felt the full impact of the tackle and took a few seconds to get up. Training staff quickly came onto the field to assist him, and Brahmer began walking off toward the sideline.
However, just moments later, Brahmer lost his balance and fell to the turf. He remained down on the playing surface before being taken off the field on a cart.
Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said that Brahmer was hospitalized as a precaution but offered a positive update on his condition. “So far the feedback we’ve gotten has been positive,” Campbell said.
Quarterback Rocco Becht expressed relief as well, stating, “We’re just happy that guy is all right. He’s conscious and we’ll miss that guy. He’ll be back better than ever.”
Earlier in the game, Brahmer had caught a touchdown pass, and the broadcast noted that he was alert while leaving the field.
Arizona State went on to win the game, 24-19, led by quarterback Jeff Sims. Sims had an outstanding performance, setting an Arizona State quarterback rushing record with 228 yards and finishing with 405 yards of total offense along with involvement in three touchdowns.
Sims broke the record with an 88-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave the Sun Devils a 24-16 lead. The previous record was set in 1978 by Mark Malone, who ran for 178 yards against Southern California.
The Sun Devils improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in Big 12 conference play with the victory.
