**Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces Accused of Mass Killing at El Fasher Hospital**
*October 29 (UPI)* — Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group involved in a civil war with Sudan’s military, have reportedly killed hundreds of patients and staff inside a hospital in El Fasher. This tragic event followed the RSF’s seizure of the capital of North Darfur state on Sunday.
The alleged massacre took place at the Saudi Maternity Hospital, where more than 460 people are believed to have been killed. The attack was strongly condemned by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the secretary-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), in a statement released on Wednesday.
“All attacks on health care must stop immediately and unconditionally,” Ghebreyesus asserted. “All patients, health personnel, and health facilities must be protected under International Humanitarian Law. Ceasefire!”
According to the WHO, prior to this latest attack, 185 attacks on health care facilities in Sudan had been verified since the civil war began in April 2023. These assaults have resulted in at least 1,204 deaths and 416 injuries among health workers and patients.
The Sudan Doctors Network, an organization dedicated to improving health care in Sudan, described the hospital attack as a “heinous crime” and a clear violation of humanitarian law. The group stated, “They cold-bloodedly killed everyone they found inside the Saudi Hospital, including patients, their companions, and anyone else present in the wards.”
Further highlighting the severity of the situation, the Sudan Doctors Network added, “Hospitals in El Fasher have been transformed into human slaughterhouses at the hands of the RSF, who make no distinction between combatant and patient, or between child and doctor.” They condemned the massacre as not an isolated incident but part of “systemic genocide” occurring in Darfur.
The organization has called upon the United Nations Security Council and other human rights groups to take urgent action in response to these atrocities.
Supporting these claims, the Yale Humanitarian Lab analyzed satellite imagery of the hospital taken on Monday and Tuesday. Their report confirms indications of a mass killing, noting groupings of white objects with reddish discoloration scattered on the ground. The white objects, measured to be the size of human bodies, were arranged in poses suggesting bending at the waist or knees.
This disturbing evidence underscores the urgent need for international intervention to protect civilians and uphold humanitarian law amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
