Hideo Kojima has delivered some of gaming’s most memorable experiences over the past few decades. However, a new account reveals that he nearly brought his unique vision to one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.
According to a story shared by former Konami Vice President of Licensing Christopher Bergstresser in an interview with Time Extension, the Wachowskis themselves approached Hideo Kojima and Konami with the concept of a video game based on *The Matrix*.
“The Wachowskis were big fans of Kojima,” Bergstresser told the outlet. “So Kazumi Kitaue, Kojima, Aki Saito (who still works with Kojima), and I were at the Konami HQ, and we got a call from the Wachowskis, who wanted to come in and meet with Kojima. So they did!”
However, the idea was ultimately rejected. Bergstresser claims that Kazumi Kitaue, a Konami producer at the time, simply said “no” when the Wachowskis asked about Konami making a *Matrix* game. This decision was likely influenced by Konami’s desire for Kojima to focus on *Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty* instead.
Despite this setback, according to another Konami employee, Kojima continued to express interest in creating a *Matrix* game after this particular pitch was shot down.
This fascinating behind-the-scenes story highlights what might have been a remarkable collaboration between Kojima and the creators of *The Matrix*. Fans can only imagine how Kojima’s creative approach would have influenced the gaming adaptation of such an iconic film franchise.
