Myles Garrett delivered one of the best performances a pass rusher can have in the NFL, yet his Cleveland Browns still fell 32-13 to the New England Patriots in Week 8. Garrett recorded an unreal five sacks in the game, an individual effort that stands out even more given the Browns’ 19-point loss.
Despite the defeat, Garrett made history by breaking Hall of Famer Reggie White’s record for the most sacks before turning 30. The Browns star now has an astonishing 112.5 sacks in his career.
Getting to the quarterback has never been an issue for Garrett. Outside of his rookie season, he has consistently posted double-digit sack totals every year of his NFL career. His peak came with 16 sacks in both 2021 and 2022, and he has not dropped below 12 sacks since 2020.
Garrett’s excellence on the field has earned him six Pro Bowl nominations, four All-Pro selections, and the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year award. However, what Garrett hasn’t seen much of in Cleveland are wins.
During his time with the Browns, the team has made the playoffs twice but has never advanced beyond the Divisional Round. Including their Week 8 loss, Cleveland has managed just five wins over the past two seasons—an underwhelming record that is no fault of Garrett’s.
At this stage, there isn’t much more Garrett can do, especially when he’s putting up performances like five sacks in a single game. Now sitting at 2-6 on the season, the Browns once again face the prospect of missing the playoffs. To avoid continuing to waste the prime of Garrett’s career, Cleveland will need to make a quick turnaround and start converting individual brilliance into team success.
