Trump raises tariffs on Canada by 10% after ad airs during World Series

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced today that he is increasing tariffs on Canada by an additional 10% “above what they’re paying now,” in response to an advertisement aired by Canada’s Ontario province. The ad, which was broadcast during the World Series, prompted Trump to react strongly, citing it as misleading.

On Thursday, Trump ended trade talks with Ottawa over the tariff-related ad, which features a video of former President Ronald Reagan—a Republican icon—warning that tariffs cause trade wars and economic disaster. The ad had been running for several days before Trump first addressed it on Thursday night.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated on Friday that after discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ontario would pause the U.S. ad campaign starting Monday to allow trade talks to resume. The advertisement aired again on Friday during Game 1 of Major League Baseball’s World Series, where the Toronto Blue Jays faced off against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote: “Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD. Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now.”

The ad was aired yet again during Game 2 of the World Series. Trump made his announcement while aboard Air Force One en route to Malaysia, the first destination on a trip through East Asia focused largely on trade issues.

Requests for comment from the U.S. Commerce Department, the White House, and the Canadian Prime Minister’s office were not immediately returned.

It remains unclear which Canadian goods will be affected by the newly announced tariffs. Most Canadian exports to the U.S. are exempt from tariffs under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), signed during Trump’s first term.

In August, the Trump administration imposed a 35% tariff on Canadian goods not covered by the USMCA. Furthermore, Canadian industries have been impacted by sector-specific tariffs of 50% on steel and aluminum, implemented this year by Trump against multiple countries.

Prime Minister Carney expressed readiness on Friday to resume trade talks with the U.S. Although both Trump and Carney are scheduled to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he has no plans to meet with the Canadian leader.

While Carney removed most of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports that were imposed by his predecessor, White House adviser Kevin Hassett noted on Friday that Trump remains frustrated with Canada, and that trade negotiations have been challenging.

The Ontario government’s ad features a voice-over of Reagan criticizing tariffs on foreign goods, stating they lead to job losses and trade wars. The video uses five complete sentences from Reagan’s five-minute weekly address, edited together out of sequence. Notably, the ad does not mention that Reagan was using the address to explain tariffs imposed on Japan by his administration as a regrettable exception to his fundamental belief in free trade as a driver of prosperity.
