Snow, sleet, freezing rain possible for Hawaii island summits

Forecasters have issued a National Weather Service winter weather advisory for the summits of Hawaii Island, in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday. Snow and freezing rain are possible during this period, which could create hazardous travel conditions.

Snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is expected, along with ice accumulation of up to a tenth of an inch. The combination of snow and ice may make roads slippery and difficult to navigate. An upper-level low pressure system will move over the Big Island tonight, bringing periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain to the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

The advisory warns of blowing snow that will significantly reduce visibility at times, with some periods experiencing zero visibility. Motorists are advised to prepare for slippery roads and limited visibility, and are urged to exercise caution while driving in the affected areas.

Currently, the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope’s website shows dark clouds as of 2 p.m. today. At the summit of Mauna Kea, the air temperature is 33°F with humidity at 97%, accompanied by light northeast winds blowing at 15 mph. Residents and visitors should stay informed and take necessary precautions throughout the advisory period.
