Trump’s Agriculture Secretary, Brooke Rollins, recently told FOX Business that the administration plans to lower the price of beef by encouraging Americans to eat more of it. This announcement comes amid growing criticism from U.S. farmers, who have expressed frustration with the Trump administration over various issues—including the rising costs of beef attributed to his imposed tariffs.
Farmers are particularly angry about the administration’s plans to import beef from Argentina, which they believe could harm the domestic market. In response, Rollins offered a somewhat unconventional solution: telling Americans to increase their beef consumption as a way to reduce prices.
“We’re implementing new programs to allow younger ranchers to get into the business with cheaper loans, better protection, et cetera,” Rollins explained. “We are working with Newton-Maha, with Bobby Kennedy, and putting protein, specifically beef, back at the center of the American diet from the government’s perspective.”
Rollins also highlighted the USDA’s daily nutrition spending, noting, “When you think about what we spend every day on nutrition programs from the USDA, it’s $400 million a day. Pivoting some of that to specifically locally grown and produced and healthy, the best beef in the world, could make a difference.”
Historically, there has been political contention over dietary guidance from the government. For example, when Michelle Obama advocated for healthier school lunches, many Republicans vocally opposed the initiative.
Critics argue that telling voters to “stuff their faces with more hamburgers if they want lower prices” is unlikely to be a winning political message. Nonetheless, the administration seems determined to put beef back on America’s dinner plates as a strategy to support ranchers and manage beef prices.
