Letter: Falls of Clyde reduced to sunken treasure of Oahu

Did you hear? The historic Falls of Clyde sailing ship, built in 1878, was hauled 25 miles out to sea Wednesday from Honolulu. It was a sad day to see this piece of history removed, especially since the state could not bring it ashore to retire with honor.

The ship was sunk at a depth of 12,500 feet, which is approximately 2.36 miles deep. Now that it is officially declared sunken treasure, I wonder—if I find it, can I keep it?

I imagine paddling out in a canoe, swimming down 2.36 miles, tying fishing string to it, reeling it up, and hauling it back ashore. If there are no zoning restrictions, I could display it in my backyard alongside my other salty ship collection!

But seriously, we are all proud of the Falls of Clyde for improving our lives in Hawaii for over a century. Fair winds and following seas, Clyde!
