Australia’s Highest Court Rejects Candace Owens’ Bid to Overturn Visa Refusal
Australia’s highest court has unanimously rejected U.S. conservative commentator Candace Owens’ attempt to overturn an Australian government decision barring her from entering the country.
Three High Court judges dismissed Owens’ challenge against Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke’s 2024 decision to refuse her a visa on character grounds. Owens had planned to begin a speaking tour in Australia last November, with additional visits planned to neighboring New Zealand.
According to court documents, Burke exercised his powers under the Migration Act in October to refuse Owens a visa after determining she failed the so-called “character test.” The minister concluded there was a risk that Owens would “incite discord in the Australian community.” He asserted that refusing her entry was in the national interest.
Owens, known as a political commentator, author, and activist, has gained notoriety for her controversial and conspiratorial views—factors that contributed to the government’s decision to bar her from the country.
