Programme managers for the European Innovation Council (EIC) play a crucial role in driving technological breakthroughs. They are responsible for envisioning innovative technologies and selecting the teams that have the potential to bring these ideas to life.
According to Michiel Scheffer, the EIC’s president, each of the council’s ten programme managers oversees a substantial number of projects. The number ranges from 20 to as many as 300 projects per manager, a workload that Scheffer describes as potentially “quite problematic.”
This high project-to-manager ratio raises concerns about the ability to provide adequate support and oversight for all funded initiatives, highlighting the challenges faced by the EIC in managing its ambitious innovation agenda.
