Luxembourg’s crown passes to Guillaume after Henri’s abdication

Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri abdicated his throne on Friday in favor of his son, Guillaume.

Henri, 70, served the tiny duchy in the heart of Europe for 25 years in a largely symbolic role. His abdication marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the Grand Duchy.

Guillaume, 43, was crowned in a ceremony before greeting the public from a balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace. He was joined by the royal family, including his wife, the Belgian-born Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy, and his sons, Charles, 5, and François, 2.

The event was attended by royals from the Netherlands and Belgium, highlighting the close ties between European monarchies.

Guillaume will be Luxembourg’s seventh Grand Duke since 1890, when the modern monarchy was established.
