Indian women’s team pacer Arundhati Reddy recently opened up about a frightening experience she faced during India’s first warm-up match against England on September 25, ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup.
### The Incident
The unsettling moment occurred when Reddy instinctively went for a return catch from England captain Heather Knight while following through. Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell awkwardly on her left leg, collapsing on the field. The fall was severe enough to prompt immediate medical attention.
### Injury Details
After the fall, Reddy was unable to put any weight on her injured leg. Medical staff quickly brought in a wheelchair to escort her off the field for further treatment. Initial concerns arose about her participation in the World Cup due to the injury.
### Remarkable Comeback
Defying the odds, Arundhati Reddy made a remarkable comeback in India’s subsequent match against New Zealand. She claimed two important wickets, playing a key role in helping India secure a four-wicket (DLS) victory.
### Recovery Process
Following the match held at Bengaluru’s BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground, teammate Harleen Deol asked Reddy how she managed to recover so swiftly after having been in a wheelchair. Reddy responded:
“Initially, it was scary for me as well because at that time it was quite a big impact, so I was really scared to even get up. But I would really like to thank the medical staff and the team because they really did a good job.”
### Looking Ahead
India is set to begin their Women’s World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on September 30 at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Although India has hosted the Women’s Cricket World Cup three times previously—in 1978, 1997, and 2013—the team has yet to win the tournament.
India’s best performance on home soil came in 1997 when they reached the semifinals before falling to Australia in New Delhi.
