Indian women’s team pacer Arundhati Reddy recently shared a frightening experience she had during India’s first warm-up match against England on September 25, ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup.
### The Incident
The scary moment happened when Reddy instinctively went for a return catch from England captain Heather Knight while following through. Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell awkwardly on her left leg, collapsing on the field. The injury prompted immediate medical attention, and Reddy was unable to put weight on her leg. A wheelchair was called in to take her off the field for treatment.
### Injury and Remarkable Comeback
Despite initial fears about her ability to continue in the tournament, Reddy made a remarkable comeback in the match against New Zealand. Demonstrating resilience, she took two crucial wickets and played a pivotal role in helping India secure a four-wicket victory under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
### Recovery Process
After the match held at Bengaluru’s BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground, teammate Harleen Deol asked Reddy how she managed to recover so quickly after having been in a wheelchair. Reddy responded, “Initially, it was scary for me as well because at that time it was quite a big impact, so I was really scared to even get up. But I would really like to thank the medical staff and the team because they really did a good job.”
### Looking Ahead: India’s World Cup Campaign
India is set to kick off their ICC Women’s World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on September 30 at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. While India has hosted the Women’s Cricket World Cup thrice before (1978, 1997, and 2013), the team has yet to win the tournament. Their best performance on home soil remains the 1997 campaign, where they reached the semifinals before narrowly losing to Australia in New Delhi.
As the tournament unfolds, hopes are high that players like Arundhati Reddy will continue to inspire with their determination and skill.
