**AI Firm Anthropic Plans to Start Operations in India**

Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) company, is set to enter the Indian market as part of its global expansion strategy. This move comes amid intense competition from tech giants such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta. The company is best known for its popular Claude AI models, which have seen exponential growth in usage worldwide.
### Expanding Leadership and Global Presence
Anthropic recently raised $13 billion in funding at a post-money valuation of $183 billion, led by investment firm Iconiq. As part of its expansion, the company is actively seeking country leads for India, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore. This information was shared by Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Anthropic, during an interview with CNBC.
### Rapid Growth in Customer Base and Workforce
The demand for Claude AI models outside the US has surged dramatically. Anthropic announced plans to triple its global workforce and increase its applied AI team fivefold this year to keep pace with this growth. Over the past two years, the company’s global customer base has skyrocketed from fewer than 1,000 business clients to more than 300,000 — an increase of over 300 times.
### India: A Key Market for Claude AI
India is currently the largest market for Anthropic’s Claude AI outside the US, accounting for 7.2% of global usage. Despite this, per-capita usage remains relatively low, at just 0.27 times per working-age individual.
Interestingly, more than half of Claude AI usage in India is devoted to coding tasks, a significantly higher proportion compared to roughly one-third globally. This highlights the unique role that AI-driven coding assistance is playing within the Indian market.
