New Road Overbridge at Panbazar built by NF Railway to be inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is pleased to announce the inauguration of the newly constructed Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Panbazar, Guwahati, on 27th September 2025. The inauguration will be graced by Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, along with state dignitaries, the General Manager of NFR, and several senior officials from the Railways and State Government.

The ROB, built at a cost of Rs. 47 crore, stretches 290 metres in length and features a wide carriageway with 1.5-metre footpaths on both sides. It is equipped with advanced engineering elements such as a 60-metre Bow String Girder and composite girders, ensuring improved vertical and horizontal clearances for transportation.

This new structure will facilitate the smooth movement of trains, including electric locomotives and over-dimensional consignments, while simultaneously easing road congestion in the busy Panbazar–Paltan Bazar corridor in Guwahati.

The old Panbazar ROB, constructed in 1965, had served the city for nearly six decades. However, it had become inadequate due to its narrow width, low clearance, and frequent waterlogging. These issues not only caused severe traffic congestion but also disrupted electrified train operations.

To address these challenges and meet the growing transport demands of the state capital, NFR initiated the replacement project in March 2024. Despite the complexity involved in dismantling the old structure and implementing modern construction techniques, the project was completed successfully within 18 months, by August 2025.

With the commissioning of this vital infrastructure, Guwahati gains safer, faster, and more reliable connectivity. The new Panbazar ROB will benefit citizens and road users alike, facilitate faster train operations, support the remodeling of Guwahati Railway Station, and strengthen multimodal transport in the region.

This milestone achievement stands as a testament to NFR’s commitment to boosting connectivity and promoting economic growth in Assam and the Northeast.
