After heavy rain caused havoc across the state, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conducted an aerial survey on Thursday to assess the damage. The chief minister surveyed flood-affected villages in the Kathua district and interacted with residents who lost their homes in the natural calamity, officials said.
According to news agency PTI, Omar Abdullah also chaired a meeting with officers, directing them to ensure necessary relief for the affected population. During his visit, he held an interaction with residents of Duggain village in Billawar, whose houses were damaged in the recent floods. Following the survey and community engagement, he met with district administration officers and officials from the chief minister’s office to discuss relief measures.
The chief minister assured all possible assistance and emphasized the need for swift administration action to provide relief to those affected. PTI further reported that Omar Abdullah is scheduled to visit the Mahore area of Reasi district to assess damage caused by flash floods.
Earlier on Monday, Omar Abdullah had directed concerned departments to fast-track flood damage assessments and expedite restoration efforts. Heavy rains across Jammu and Kashmir triggered flash floods in numerous rivers and drains, resulting in landslides and severe disruptions to traffic.
Speaking about the disaster, the chief minister highlighted the extensive damage caused by the floods. Public infrastructure suffered massive losses, including damage to 330 bridges and 1,500 kilometers of roads. Private properties, such as homes and agricultural fields, were also devastated.
In response to the calamity, the Indian Army’s 26 Rashtriya Rifles unit organized a five-day free medical camp under Operation Sadbhavana in the Bhalesa area of Doda district. This medical outreach aimed to assist flood-affected residents by providing continuous healthcare services, including free medicines. The camp treated over 100 patients with doctors and medical staff available on-site throughout the operation.
