Ukraine Restores Diplomatic Relations with Syria, Zelensky Says
Ukraine broke off diplomatic relations with Syria in 2022 after the ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad’s government recognized swathes of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory as “independent” Russian-backed areas. This move was seen as a direct challenge to Ukraine’s sovereignty amid ongoing conflict.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced the restoration of diplomatic ties with Syria. This development marks a significant shift in Ukraine’s foreign relations and underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play.
President Zelensky made the announcement during a meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace in Rome, Italy, on July 9, 2025.
