Microsoft is bringing back a highly requested feature for Windows users: video wallpapers. Recently spotted in test builds of Windows 11, this new capability allows users to set MP4 or MKV video files as their desktop wallpaper. The videos will play whenever you view your desktop, providing a dynamic and visually engaging experience similar to popular third-party applications like Wallpaper Engine.
### A Throwback to DreamScene Days
The video wallpaper feature is reminiscent of the DreamScene functionality from Windows Vista. DreamScene was available in the Ultimate edition of Vista, allowing users to set videos as desktop backgrounds. However, this feature was discontinued starting with Windows 7.
Microsoft’s reintroduction of video wallpapers comes after years of testing dynamic animated wallpapers for Windows 11. Although originally planned to launch in 2023, these features did not make it into the release version until now.
