Rishabh Pant to Miss West Indies Test Series: Here’s Why

The Indian cricket team will be without their star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for the upcoming two-match home Test series against the West Indies, according to ESPNcricinfo. The series is scheduled to begin on October 2 in Ahmedabad.
Injury and Recovery
Pant is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru after suffering a fractured left foot during India’s England tour in July. The injury occurred during the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Manchester, where Pant limped out to bat in the first innings but was subsequently ruled out. He was replaced by N Jagadeesan for the final Test at The Oval.
Since then, Pant has been focusing on strength and conditioning exercises as part of his recovery process but there is no fixed timeline for his return to batting and wicketkeeping duties. He remains under regular evaluation by the BCCI medical team.
Impact on Upcoming Matches
India will face the West Indies in the two-match Test series starting October 2, followed by a white-ball series in Australia beginning October 19. With Pant sidelined, Dhruv Jurel is expected to take over the wicketkeeping responsibilities for the home Test series.
Squad Selection and Team Prospects
The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is set to announce the 15-member squad for the West Indies series on either September 23 or 24. This squad will be smaller by two players compared to India’s last home series against New Zealand in October. Emerging players like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Devdutt Padikkal are likely to be considered for inclusion.
World Test Championship Context
The upcoming India-West Indies Tests are part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC). India currently hold third place in the WTC standings after drawing a highly competitive five-match series against England with a 2-2 result. In contrast, the West Indies sit sixth, having lost all three of their matches so far.
Despite the absence of Rishabh Pant, the Indian team is expected to be the dominant side throughout the series.
