Apple has announced an increase in production for its latest iPhone 17 model following an impressive response during the pre-order phase. The tech giant has instructed its supplier Luxshare Precision to boost output by approximately 40%, while another supplier is expected to raise production by around 30%, according to reports from The Information.
This surge in manufacturing highlights a clear consumer preference for the regular iPhone 17 over the more expensive Pro variants.
**Feature Upgrades Narrow the Gap**
One of the key factors driving demand for the standard iPhone 17 is its new feature set. The model now includes screen and camera enhancements that were previously exclusive to the Pro versions. This feature upgrade has effectively narrowed the gap between Apple’s entry-level iPhone and its premium counterparts.
The shift also reflects a broader trend: even Apple is adapting to more price-sensitive consumers, moving away from its traditional focus on pushing high-margin, premium devices.
**Adjusting Production Based on Demand**
Apple’s decision to increase production aligns with its annual strategy to recalibrate manufacturing orders based on real market demand. Earlier reports indicated that the standard iPhone 17 was expected to represent 25% of total production. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models accounted for 65%, with the newly introduced iPhone Air making up the remaining 10%.
**Addressing Slowing Upgrades and Growth Challenges**
With consumers upgrading their devices less frequently and new models offering only incremental improvements, Apple has struggled to maintain strong sales in recent years. The company is betting on its refreshed iPhone lineup, which now includes a thinner “iPhone Air,” to stimulate growth in its flagship product segment.
However, analysts caution that while the emphasis on lower-priced models may help Apple retain market share, it could also put pressure on the company’s profit margins.
