**Union Minister Pabitra Margherita Highlights India’s Strength as a Global Textile Hub**
*Bhopal:* Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, on Friday emphasized that India is already a major textile hub and the world’s largest textile market with a consumer base of 1.4 billion people.
Speaking on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bhopal, Margherita addressed concerns amid steep tariffs imposed by the US on Indian textile products, which many fear could impact the country’s textile industry.
“Although we are global, we are making our local global. If I speak only about the textile industry, we are the biggest consumer market in the world with 1.4 billion consumers. Our domestic market is very strong,” he said.
The Minister highlighted India’s rich heritage in textiles, stating, “Our Bharat is already a textile hub. We have been leaders in the field of textiles for centuries. And under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, like other sectors, the textile sector is also progressing manifold.”
Margherita also expressed confidence in India’s position as a leading exporter of apparel and other textile products. “We are one of the top leaders in the textile industry and fashion technology — one of the most important pillars. With these 19 NIFT campuses, we are providing special courses, training, and specialization to our students. Bright and brilliant students are graduating today. As envisioned by PM Modi, these students will contribute significantly to our textile industry in the coming days,” he said.
Addressing a query on promoting domestic products, the Union Minister stated that students are being encouraged to “be vocal for local” and then work towards making these products global.
Regarding the upcoming PM MITRA Park in Dhar, whose foundation stone was laid by PM Modi on September 17, Margherita described it as a potential gamechanger for the textile industry not just in Madhya Pradesh but across India. “Spread over 2,150 acres, this park will empower the Viksit Bharat journey,” he added.
