A Louisiana immigration judge ordered the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student and protest leader, to Algeria or Syria on Friday, according to documents published by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Khalil, who led the Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) campaign, was detained on March 8 and had his green card revoked due to his involvement in what authorities described as belligerent activism on campus.

On September 12, Khalil was denied a twelve-day extension, a change of venue to New York, and a waiver for removability.

Judge Jamee Comans ruled that Khalil was not eligible for a discretionary waiver based on family ties or good legal character. The judge cited Khalil’s failure to disclose his affiliations with CUAD and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) when adjusting his immigration status in the United States.

Following the ruling, Khalil’s legal team filed an appeal on Wednesday with the New Jersey federal court overseeing his civil rights case.

**Public Reactions**

Reactions from online commentators varied widely. Some expressed support for the deportation order:

– “Adios Mahmoud! Take Jimmy Kimmel and the Abrego Kid with you!”
– “Destroy America from within? On hold! Enlisted USN 1967 proudly! Winning currently!”

Others shared unrelated commentary, such as details about the Seychelles, highlighting the diversity of opinions and discussions surrounding the case.
